The Play Journey
Child-centred Play Therapy
About
Play Therapist
I'm Cheryl, a play therapist accredited by the British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT). I provide one to one play therapy sessions.
I've been a therapist since 2014, supporting children and young people with social, emotional difficulties and behavioural challenges due to varying needs such as ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, speech and language delay, global developmental delay, Down’s Syndrome, developmental trauma, neglect. I have supported individuals from a wide range of age (3 to 21) but mainly with the younger ages. I spent most of my professional experience in educational (mainstream & SEMH) and home-based settings. I also have experience working with individuals from different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds.

I use a primarily non-directive, child-centred play therapy approach. Depending on each child's needs, I might take on an integrative approach, using directive techniques as well.

Play Therapy
About
a type of child therapy that helps children to explore their feelings, express themselves and make sense of their experiences.
Why
Play is children's natural medium of communication, as they might find it hard to use words to express their difficult experiences and emotions. Often, they use toys and/or art materials to form stories which can also be a less daunting experience for them to talk about them.
How
It helps children and young people find healthier ways of communicating, facilitate emotional literacy, develop fulfilling relationships and increase resiliency. The resulting empowerment and increased self-esteem can be the
springboard to help children cope with
difficulties in the real world.
